1879 – The first Australian rules football game to be played at night took place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The game was to promote the introduction of electricity to the city of Melbourne.


1966 – Muhammad Ali KOs Brian London in 3 to retain heavyweight boxing title

1972 – Garry Player wins PGA golf tournament

1984 – Carl Lewis wins 2nd (long jump) of 4 gold medals in Summer Olympics 

2001- Two-time champion Marion Jones had her string of 42 consecutive 100-meter final victories snapped when she was defeated by Zhanna Pintusevich-Block of Ukraine at the World Track and Field Championships.
